Funny Business
So no Joe the Plumber here tonight. At least that's what I've been told.
We still don't know when John McCain will arrive at the Biltmore (he plans to watch election returns from home). And we still don't know the official program for tonight.

One reporter who has covered the McCain campaign from the beginning isn't surprised that things are so fluid. "They're superstitious," the reporter says of the campaign. "They won't even write the speech until the returns come in."
Right now I'm sitting in the main ballroom wedged onto the second tier of a four-tier riser, about four spots in on a 20 spot row. When you see me on TV, it'll look like I have a great shot of the room behind me, when, in fact, I'm positioned in JUST the right spot so that you don't see the lights and cameras in the tier below and in front of me. I had a chair to sit on but it keeps being taken over by "squatters".
I'm scanning the crowd of supporters starting to filter into the room. There are a lot of women here who could pass for my sisters--bottle blondes, very white, dressed up -- except their jewelry is better. I'm straining to find anyone outside of the media who is not white. Um, I'll get back to your on that.
The spread is nachos and pretzels. But be warned, the McCain Victory Party t-shirts are $15, and they only take cash.
