The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro

Ed Welburn, head of GM design, began the design process with a challenge. A Detroit design studio charged with creating a retro design and an Australian design studio charged with designing a modern design. The two designs worked in parallel. Australia won!

The four-pack of gauges is a retro element that is included in the 2010 Camaro. The contemporary flair took a lot of time to design in the virtual world before getting it right. It is one of the highlights for Welburn & Dale Jr.

General Motors plays a game of cat and mouse with spy photographers. All Camaros are camouflaged so they can be tested on open roads without the public getting a clear look at what the 2010 Camaro will look like.

GM invited NASCAR great and Chevy supporter, Dale Earnhardt Jr., to come to Australia and test drive the 2010 Camaro. The ultimate test driver said when you own and drive a Camaro "you feel a sense of pride in the vehicle because of the history of the car maker."

Dale Earnhardt Jr., the ultimate test-driver, arrived at Holden's Proving Grounds in Lang Lang, Australia in style. He was meeting the 2010 Camaro for the first time and you could feel the excitement. Very few people get the opportunity to test drive a car at this stage of development.

It is not very often you get to go behind the wheel of an American icon with a NASCAR great. CNBC's Phil LeBeau strapped himself in for this unique opportunity to get some feedback on the Camaro while going 100 miles per hour.

Dale Jr. gave his critique of the 2010 Camaro to CNBC's Phil LeBeau. He also offered some insight to GM execs as to which Holden vehicles he would like to see go on sale in the United States.

GM engineers took 5 Chevy Camaros on the open road to see how they perform on their first long drives. The road test was 1,300 miles long through rural Australia.

GM Global Vehicle Line Executive, Gene Stefanyshyn, gets in the dirt to change a tire after one driver on the test drive took it too wide. Gene joined GM Canada in 1976 and currently leads Camaros Australian-based engineering team that specializes in rear-wheel drive platforms.

CNBC was fortunate to have an all-access pass to see the development of this American icon. Spy photographers were hoping to catch just one shot of the camouflaged Camaro by hiding along the 1,300 mile test drive route through rural Australia.

General Motors did its cold-weather testing in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. This is just one step in Camaros extreme weather endurance testing. Cars are expected to start in temps as cold as 40 degrees below zero.

The 2010 Camaro officially unveiled in mid-July.
